The vines are beginning their winter rest after giving up sweet grapes in late summer. They stand like soldiers as they wait for winter to remove everything except their dark gnarly vines firmly planted in the soil. The afternoon is so quiet and warm and peaceful and so unlike the cold winter blast that is due in a few days. I almost feel as if I am saying goodbye to a lover, as my heart rests in my throat and I gasp at this all too brief beauty. I turn and at my back stands the unreformed woods also in all their glory, sheltering small birds and mammals and bracing for the winds and rain that will tear leaves from their branches leaving them in dark silhouette for the months to come.
