Exhaling

Like a steaming cauldron
the night bubbles
with hot mist
crossing the river.

Like a faltering soul
I hold my breath
pretending the
cool night will come.

Everywhere the heat
simmers with the
earnestness of
a 16-year-old
seeing his first beauty,

Even though the days
are growing shorter
like the memory
of an old man
facing his next birthday.

But no one notices because
The beat of the heat goes on and on

And on...

  2. I feel the heat seeping through your lovely, perfect words.

Wet and hot as they are, I must profess gratitude that the snow is not flying by my window.

and here i sit, shrouded in fog, the air is bitterly cold as it travels from the snow capped mountains to my home.
But, I am mindful of the heat that I will be blasted by come summer down under and so I know with great clarity the days of stifling stillness that you are now existing in.
    Keep cool my friend

  6. tabor, you hit this one right on the head!! you've done such a fine job with defining what so many of us are suffering with-heat that seems to have no relief in sight! how is your garden holding up with the onslaught of high temps?

  9. Sheri, the garden is holding up thus far. We actually have had a few good rains. Weeds are prolific, though.

  10. This is so much more beautiful than my mental pictures during the recent heat wave. Instead of that earnest young 16-year-old, I was being pursued by a sweaty old red-faced fat guy in one of those armless undershirts.

  11. This is beautiful - and we experience the same over in Germany at the moment
    ..the night bubbles
    with hot mist...
It's just not cooling down - but like it!

  18. "I hold my breath
    pretending the
    cool night will come."

This was once true, Tabor. But in this our 12th August in Texas, I know the cool night won't come for a long time. I've given up pretending, but wish you some cool nights for sleeping.
