Orphans

These are the babies that were abandoned during the time we put in the pavers and the asphalt driveway. The nest was about 30 feet away and the noise and dust for 5 days were just too much for Mrs. Bluebird. I must admit that it was almost too much for me.  Another (?) Mrs. Bluebird was seen bathing in the bird bath near the birdhouse a day ago; so we are hoping she found somewhere near to start a second nest. :-(

  1. Didn't know bluebird eggs were blue! Thought only robins eggs were. Sad, but that dang circle of life keeps going around.

  4. Brian, the orphans are dead. She didn't sit on them for days and got quite cold at night. I am just keeping the eggs and nest for beauty right now.

Tis sad that mom was forced away.

  7. Mrs. Bluebird abandoned her nest - in my new bluebird house. Never saw any activity and 3 days ago I opened the door on the house. There was the nest intact with 2 eggs. Wonder what happened? Surely no noise here in the woods - except nature sounds.

  8. We have a quail's nest in the bushes right outside our bedroom window. The mother is still sitting on the eggs...there are more than a dozen! I can't wait to see the babies. I have to resist checking on the mother quail so she doesn't get tired of being disturbed. You can see my picture of the nest at

It takes about 25 days to hatch, so I've still got several weeks of waiting.

  10. Aww that's a shame but it happens all the time in nature.. probably without much of the emotion we put into it. Still.. it tugs.

  12. That's so sad. They are such beautiful eggs. Are you going to try to hatch them or take them to the Audibon Society?
