Rocky Shores, Maine

"If you compare NASA's annual budget to explore the heavens, that one year budget would fund NOAA's budget to explore the oceans for 1,600 years."
Robert Ballard

The shattered water made a misty din.
Great waves looked over others coming in,
And thought of doing something to the shore
That water never did to land before.
The clouds were low and hairy in the skies,
Like locks blown forward in the gleam of eyes.
You could not tell, and yet it looked as if
The shore was lucky in being backed by cliff,
The cliff in being backed by continent;
It looked as if a night of dark intent
Was coming, and not only a night, an age.
Someone had better be prepared for rage.
There would be more than ocean-water broken
Before God's last Put out the Light was spoken.
Robert Frost

“And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have, in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch it, we are going back from whence we came.” ― John F. Kennedy

  1. I have always believed that I could live in a colony under the ocean if they ever establish one. That, for some reason, appeals to me more than living in outer space. Perhaps you have identified that lust for me by our affection for the sea.

  7. Love the pictures and the quotes.
Guess one thing I know for sure..
    I miss the ocean
and in the past when I was near the ocean and fresh seafood - I never wanted to leave.
Here I live surrounded by trees
    with no water in site.
    Makes me wonder...

  8. Magnificent views ~ putting a person and the dog in the last frame gave a great perspective to the shots.

  11. It's said that we know more about the moon's surface than we know about the sea. Fine post.

  13. Wonderful pictures. I love how you post them so large, I can relate to them better than to small photos.

Love Robert Frost, too, he so often wrote things that rang a bell for me.

  15. That's not true about the salt in the blood, of course, but it did sound nice. Must explain why I'd rather be in the woods: I have a high moss content in my blood.

  16. What pleasures there are to be had being beside the ocean or river or lake and being able to throw sticks or stones in to see and hear the splashes. I liked that photo of your Tabor - Dave
