Missing in Action

My flowers have been covered in both yellow swallowtail and black swallowtail butterflies this late summer.  They sometimes land on the same flower struggling for the upper wing.  I have seen one or two Zebra butterflies and one or two Sulphur butterflies as well...but not a single Monarch.  I planted butterfly weed just for them, but they are in very small numbers everywhere this year!

  1. I also planted butterfly weed not last spring but the one before because I hadn't been seeing any Monarchs when in previous years they had been so bountiful and the plants have multiplied wonderfully. I have seen more this year than in several years past.

  2. A friend of mine has a garden that seems to always have butterflies. It's lovely to stop and watch them.

  3. Well, maybe next year for the monarchs. You're doing the right thing.

  4. Butterflies are about done here for this summer. We don't have Monarchs here.

  5. Occasionally I will spot a beautiful butterfly but I believe my chickens, guineas, cats and dogs keep them from gathering for very long. Your picture is lovely.
