Another Lunch Guest

While eating lunch yesterday I happened to glance out my breakfast corner window.  It was a dreary rainy day.  It had actually been raining for several days and I had been thinking about my day lilies that had arrived and were waiting patiently in my cold garage to be planted.

Something red caught my eye.  It was not a cardinal.  I knew that I could not sneak open the deck door without losing the opportunity and therefore took these through the double-paned window.

One would think that when one was packing such a dangerous weapon one would be just a little braver when it comes to stalking photographers.

What a fabulous bird. Great shots despite them being taken through the glass.

  2. I would have never known they were taken through glass. I'm surprised the head wasn't a blur and it amazes me how they can cling to the tree with just those tiny claws.

  3. Pileated woodpeckers are fascinating, Tabor. I seldom catch sight of more than one or two a year, but I sure hear them frequently.

  5. I've never seen a Pileated woodpecker but I know they're in the area as some of my neighbours have snapped shots of them. What a beauty! Good job. My through-the-glass images always tend to look so flat.

  6. Tabor, beautiful image. When I saw this bird in my yard, it surely made me smile. Wish they would make another visit.

  8. One Pileated Woodpecker has been spotted since we have lived here. He was perfectly framed in our front window on the light pole and when I found the camera, the battery was dead. I am double jealous of your great shot!

  9. Great shots. It seems to me the pileated woodpeckers come closer to the house in the springtime, but I have no idea why. (Or maybe I'm just mistaken)

  10. I can imagine your excitement :) It's such a privilege to get a glimpse of these amazing birds, isn't it? It's only happened to me twice...just for an instant - not long enough to snap a photo. And I didn't have a camera in my hand either time.
Your shots came out wonderfully well for being taking through double paned glass.
I hope you're lucky enough to see more of him.

  11. I forgot to say how pleased I am that you have daylilies to plant! Yay! I hope they do very well for you.
Our weather has been just like yours...still overcast and dreary here today after a day of non-stop rain yesterday. But the upcoming weekend looks fantastic! Hope it's lovely down there too.
