Food for the Soul

The passage of time has revealed that the fruit on this ornamental strawberry is  nothing to write home about.  Like the roses they now breed for beauty instead of fragrance and for size instead of hardiness, this plant is mostly show.  The flowers which continue to bloom are stunning in color, though.  They glow like red jewels in the corner of my flower bed.  If you click on the photo you will see little disks like tambourines just waiting to be struck to ring out the jazz pizazz.  The runners for new plants are also prolific.  So, I guess, if you are not hungry, it doesn't make any difference, does it?

Above are some REAL strawberries from my garden.

  4. The home=grown are so sweet and so perishable. Enjoy them before snails or birds beat you to them.

  5. I'm with Barry, though where flowers are concerned the beauty comes first and I'm not particular about strawberries, I can take them or leave them, as they say.

  7. I just found your blog somehow and have been scrolling down. Your roses are beautiful. I bought 5 rose bushes and hope they will do fine. I especially like your soft salmon color old-fashion type rose. Would you mind telling me what is its name? It looks like it would have a sweet fragrance.

  8. Thank you for coming to my blog. The rose I am talking about: if you count the red rose as picture no. 1, the rose I like is picture no.5, two roses with many petals.

  11. That is a stunning flower. Red being my favorite color, of course I like it and the red rose in your mothers day post. Is it your Don Juan?

  12. I believe the love of strawberries came from one sitting in the patch, picking and popping then right into the mouth. They never seem as pretty as at that moment. Sort of like raspberries - pick one for jelly, eat three, pick on for the jelly, eat four...

  13. That's perfection in a small bright pink flower! I love the tambourines :) I have one plant but it's buried under weeds that grew in the compost that my hubby and daughter heaped on the garden in March. Beautiful stuff. The weeds love it! (so do the chosen plants).
We have real strawberries planted too but we won't have berries until mid-June.
Thanks for your kind words, Tabor. Hubby worked outside driving the tractor yesterday for the first time since his release from the hospital. He's getting there :)
I've thoroughly enjoyed catching up with your posts this morning.
