Red House Finch

All of these red house finch photos were shot through a window...so they have that soft blurry inaccurate crispness going for them.  It was often too cold for me to go outside and wait for a good shot and I am getting less adventuresome on windy cold days.  The above was taken after our first winter snowfall this year.

This fellow above hid under the table waiting patiently for a Cooper's Hawk to leave the back yard which it eventually did.

And in most bird species the male is the pretty one.  So, here is the soft gray of the female finch at the feeder dish.  My goal is to get some good purple finch photos, but have not been as successful with that as we have only one pair visiting the feeder.

  1. Those finches are incredible - I wish we had that kind here! Beautiful shots, and such a vibrant colour :)

  2. What a lovely splash of colour to have around the house! I wish I could lure a few more finches to my feeder. Very nice shots, Tabor.

  4. Good camera work again. Fun to watch those little guys. Our finches have moved off as the squirrels and starlings seem to have settled in this week.

  5. Such beautiful little birds - and such beautiful photos of them! Thanks for sharing. We have house finches here with a patch of rust on their heads but none as vibrant as the reds you have.

  6. beautiful images of the beautiful birds. I have nothing like this in the woods. they look just like brown birds from afar. maybe if I was closer -- maybe they have some special beauty

  9. I think the glass has added something, rather than the reverse. Excellent.

  10. Oh, I like the red one, Tabor!! Doesn't he look as if he has an "I wouldn't advise messing with me, truly I would not." look on his face?

I think the world forgot to tell him he's little :-)

Really good shots. We also have a hawk that visits the backyard and stares calmly around him. I guess when you are a bird of prey, you can stare big things down calmly.

  12. Great shots of both male and female, Tabor. Through the window is the way to go, especially when the cold winds blow.
The little red finches are such bright spots of color. We get the purples in the warmer months but they go somewhere else for the winter, unfortunately. Rarely see house finches here.
