My Speedy Discovery.

My first post on a discovery of a hybrid of this plant is here and that was a few years ago.  After I transplanted the hitchhiker from my pot of pansies it put up its beauty the next spring in photos HERE.  Yes, it is a little bolder in color and size than the wild variety below, but both are invasive.

Val  (who no longer blogs as much) pointed out what a weed this was in England and now that I have a really weedy version on the other side of my driveway competing with my lawn...which is not such a great lawn anyway... I am enjoying the invasion.  I think I will just leave this ground cover even though the blooms will stop once the weather gets warm.

  1. How pretty! A weed is just a flower whose potential goes unrecognized...

  2. Your speedwell is beautiful. What a wee is, is a value judgement. I have tiny wild violets in my funky lawn. Someone is always offering to eradicate them. No thanks, I look forward to them every early spring.

  3. I meant weed of course. Nuts, new keyboard, old fingers.

  4. Those are really pretty blossoms! Is it is sun or shade? I need something for a patch of bad grass and a ground cover like this would be great. It's a very sunny spot, though, and the soil isn't good soil.

I love Pauline's comment about weeds being flowers "whose potential goes unrecognized."

  6. Thanks! I think I'll try them on that sunny spot, this year.

  7. I have that too, Tabor, and 'weed' (or not :D) is all in the eye of the beholder. I adore it. And as I battle and cuss the Bermuda grass, I would be one happy duck to have it COMPLETELY replace anything in my yard that is supposed to resemble 'lawn'. LOL I am sooooo loving the awakening Spring here, Tabor. I am absolutely reveling in it. Each Spring my little 'stick's, and perennials look more like what I hope for them. I heard one time "first they sleep, then they creep, then they LEAP", and that's what I go through my yard chanting. :) I just came in from 'dragging the hem of my 'gown' (in my case, sweatpants :d) through the dew' (as Sharon Lovejoy says) looking at each little sprout---and the birds, oh Tabor, have I died already and gone to heaven???? :D

  9. A friend recently sent me the following quote: "The difference between a flower and a weed is a judgement" - very similar to what Celia wrote.
Speedwell is lovely with its tiny blue flowers. A 'free' groundcover with such beauty is not to be sneezed at :)
Like Celia I thoroughly enjoy the wild violets in our lawn each spring.
I have much to catch up on here and will be back soon to do that.
Happy spring, Tabor! It feels like winter here this morning.

  11. Speedwell has taken over my lawn. If only I had known that it would spread like this. I now am considering replacing my entire lawn because I don't think the grass has a chance ever again.
