Love that broach, roach.
This photo was taken about a week ago. I love this mum for its cone shaped petals and its pink tinge on the border petals. It almost looks like a dahlia. I guess I really love this mum for its ability to use jeweled accessories so dramatically ;-). I have searched to identify this beetle without success. I have seen it before in my garden and it looks like it is searching for small insects inside the flower. (When I went out two days later just before the cold norther, this long beetle was still there!) Click on the photo for a better look.

I have never seen a colorful beetle like this,it would be interesting to find what it is. My son who is a contractor says that new species of insects are being brought in with lumber and building materials from other places.I know we didn't used to have Black Widow Spiders here, but after we brought in some cement blocks we have them everywhere now,so who knows where your little friend came from!
ReplyDeleteOoh, I know this one - it's an Ailanthus Webworm Moth. But the only reason I know is because they were all over the garden a couple of years ago and I posted an ID request on bugguide.net. It coordinates beautifully with the colors of the mum!
ReplyDeleteI doubt I have ever seen an Ailanthus Webworm moth either, not that I've ever looked for one.
ReplyDeleteBut they make for a fine jewelry accessory for a mum, although I don't thnk my mom would appreciate one for Christmas.
Thanks, Entangled.
ReplyDeleteCarolina nana, they seem to be everywhere each summer.
Barry, you never know...;-)
Hello Tabor... I have seen that moth before--but didn't know his name. Thanks to Entangled for helping us on this one.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flower...
Hugs,
Betsy
That is quite some beetle ... also an admirer of that Mum (apparently near sighted, it had to get very close!)
ReplyDeleteI can see why it fascinates you so. Intriguing - and a great picture to boot!
ReplyDeleteThe mum is beautiful with or without the moth beetle. It does look a great deal like a dahlia, Tabor. You captured it in a lovely stage with the pink petals framing the yellow interior ones. Wonderful!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt sure makes for a great addition to that beautiful Mum. Gorgeous photo.
ReplyDeleteYour Mum is truly beautiful. Apparently the handsome beatle appreciates it too.
ReplyDeleteLove this photo, Tabor.
I meant to mention in the previous comment that your sunset photo, looking past the bow of the boat, is gorgeous!
