We have two variety of woodpeckers around the house and field - greater spotted (who is like your friend in colouring) and the green woodpecker, known in the olden days as yaffle (from his laughing call). Wonderful to hear and see, a privilege.
This is a great shot. Yes indeed, the woodpeckers really are joyful and so much fun to watch as they chase each other around. I love their jerky little movements. I have one little lady who likes to come quite close and leans down as if to chat with me when I'm filling the feeders. I get such a kick out of her :)
I just love the touch of red on his head, he really is quite divine.
